Dale is a freaking Neutral here. He wont turn a hair on backstabbing a new acquaintance to get his hand of a very important device. Note that he visit this dungeon many times before so he knew it inside out. If he do something to our halpless protagonist (several levels behind), he got the right time, the right place, and the right victim.
But he wouldnt imagine that the dungeon increase in difficulty just because his party increase.

To reiterate:
Originally, Dale presented the map of 3-floor dungeon. However, the ground broke and they fell to level 5. Either the dungeon changed drastically, or Dale lied.
They fell down to the ground and lie there until Dale body pass the limit and turn to light, leaving behind the Key of war. Meaning he brought it with him. Meanwhile someone frame Irlin with the crime of stealing that.
Irvin has much cash money, 500k, which is 5 times the amount Dale received in budget form. If Dale kill Irlin and take that cash, no one will be the wiser. And killing a fugitive wont bring much trouble as killing a normal citizen.

Dale probably wanted to awaken himself the gundam or evangelion lying in the undreground, so he stole the key. That caused all the matter. Afterwards, Fir was nowhere to be found so… scapegoat!
(It’s possible that Dale had nothing to do with framing him and about the dungeon, I don’t think he was lying. Maybe that key has hidden effects.)
When I read the key’s description, everything had a sense. The author did a great job!

So if your army is only 1 your enemy can only deploy 1 and if your side dies your enemy can’t continue the attack and it will end with a tie? meaning you can’t lose at worst it will only end up in a tie or win the war? Is this what it means?

The item doesn´t work when you are the attacker.
And since there´s an item for the defender, there´s probably some item for an attacker to break the protection effect, too.
Juts that you´d need someone to obtain it first like the MC did with the defensive item.

So MC got the highest itimacy with all citizens of the kingdom for completing the king´s quest bringing back the key and helping in starting the war and then he is liked even more for stoping the war that he himself helped to start…
Now talk about a bug…
That´s like buying an item from the NPC store with a 50% discount skill for half price increasing your favor with the store for being a good customer.
Then selling the same item back to the same store for half the market price while using a bargaining skill to increase your selling price by 50% making it a total of (50% + 25% (50% of 50%)) = 75% of the market price and with that increasing your favor with the store again for being a good supplier.
And all that while gaining a total of the original market price as profit for absolutely nothing from the store.
